The Challenge
In March 2020, COVID-19 abruptly prompted social distancing and the closure of businesses, including restaurants and beaches. With tourism on hold, Visit South Walton’s focus pivoted to health and safety, supporting local partners, and preparing for the return of travel in an uncertain future. Collaborating remotely, the teams at Zehnder and South Walton worked around the clock to strategize, develop, and launch a response to the emergency.

The Strategy
Response to the global pandemic came in two phases:
Phase 1: Virtual Beach Vibes launched in late March. This initiative supported local businesses and kept the South Walton spirit alive and well through virtual content. The team shared live music, chef demos, virtual tours, and more across social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
As beaches reopened, the Phase 2: “Stay Safe” and Memories Campaign shifted the focus to safe travel, taking a proactive approach so visitors could feel confident, informed, and excited to experience South Walton’s magic again, creating memories to last a lifetime. The “Beach Safely” message was promoted via social media, Pandora, weather apps, and search engine marketing, targeting potential visitors in drive markets.
